Cautionary tales (nightclubs/girls)

In another blog I talk about the perils facing male patrons of nightclubs. It goes without saying that women are at greater risk. We ran Globetrotters for fifteen years and, during that time, several of our female guests had distressing experiences.

I can think of four cases but there could have been more because, as a backpacker owner, you don’t always get to hear about them. The so-called rape drug was involved in each case.  And I’m not talking about an aphrodisiac. The girls weren’t plied with drinks to break down their inhibitions and make them feel sexy. They were given a drug that rendered them senseless. Worse still, they were so confused that it was impossible to work out exactly what had happened. All they knew was that they had been violated and could only guess who had done it.

Should such a fate befall someone you know, make sure that the police are informed immediately and insist on a full medical examination including blood and urine tests. The latter are important since many drugs are expelled from the body and early tests are needed to detect them. Should you be the victim, the likelihood is that you will be too befuddled to take any effective action.

Certain basic rules will help you avoid trouble.

  •  Don’t accept drinks from people you can’t trust.
  •  Keep your hand over your glass at all times.
  •  Avoid getting drunk.

And don't forget that you can be handed a spiked drink anywhere – not just in a nightclub. I know one young lady whose drink was spiked at an office party when she was working in the headquarters of a leading international company. The incident occurred in Sydney but could have happened anywhere. The victim had her drink spiked by colleagues who were out to humiliate her. The problem was to work out exactly what had happened and gather proof. There was a lot of circumstantial evidence but nothing that couldn’t be denied. The case would make a good background plot for a novel. Maybe I’ll have a go at it one day.

This brings me back to the point I made earlier. If you suspect that someone is the victim of a spiked drink make sure the police are called. Bar staff are often reluctant to do this so you may have to do it yourself.
